We Didn’t Steal the Rainbow—You Stole It From Us

Who Really Stole the Rainbow?

One of the most common things I hear, especially around Pride, is:

“You stole the rainbow.”

Apparently, the 2SLGBTQIA+ community “stole the rainbow from God.” But the truth?

You stole the rainbow from me.

When I was a kid, I couldn’t picture my future. It was dark and colorless—because I didn’t see people like me living openly and happily. There were no queer role models, no safe spaces, no representation.

I didn’t know what kind of life I could have because you—society, bigotry, silence—stole that future from me.

You took away my dreams, my aspirations, my sense of belonging. You drained the color from my childhood.

Reclaiming My Colors

But over the past 44 years, I found my colors again.

❤️ Red for the love I’ve learned to give myself.

🧡 Orange for the warmth of a community that accepts me.

💛 Yellow for the joy I now allow myself to feel.

💚 Green for the growth I’ve fought for.

💙 Blue for the peace I’ve finally found.

💜 Purple for the power of reclaiming my own identity.

I gathered them all, piece by piece, and created a life full of color—a life I was once told I couldn’t have.

A Rainbow for Everyone

The rainbow wasn’t stolen from you. You took it from me, and I reclaimed it. And no—you’re not getting it back.

And for those who say, “Leave the kids alone. They don’t need to see that,”—yes, they do.

Because when you hide queerness, when you erase it, you steal the rainbow from them too. You rob them of possibility, of joy, of the chance to see a future where they can be fully themselves.

So whether you see the rainbow as a scientific wonder or a gift from God, remember this: it belongs to all of us.

Every person deserves every color of that rainbow.
