Kids Understand More Than You Think

The other day, my brother was talking to my niece. He asked her, “What are you?”

She answered, “I’m a girl.”

He continued, “What’s Nana?”

“Nana’s a girl.”

“What’s Papa?”

“Papa is a boy.”

Then he asked, “What’s Chacha?” (That’s what she calls me.)

And without hesitation, she said, “Chacha is a they them.”

Isn’t that the cutest?

It’s Not Complicated—It’s Just Love

She didn’t struggle to understand it. She didn’t need a debate. She just recognized me for who I am—because kids are way better at this than adults.

So no, it’s not confusion. It’s not indoctrination.

It’s just love and family. That’s it.
